Incumbent House R announces Senate bid in 26th LD

Republican Rep. Michelle Caldier plans to run for the 26th Legislative District Senate seat that will be on the ballot next year following Democrat Emily Randall’s ascension to Congress.

Randall’s seat will be filled with a Democratic appointee TBD in the coming weeks, but that person will have to run in 2025 for the final year of her term.

Caldier, R-Gig Harbor, told The Observer that she’s running to take back some of the territory Republicans have lost to the Democratic majority in recent years. Democrats picked up a seat in both the Senate and the House this year, including the other House seat in the 26th, where first-term GOP Rep. Spencer Hutchins didn’t seek reelection. That gives Democrats a 60% supermajority in both chambers. In theory, that means Democrats could issue debt and pass capital and transportation budgets without Republican votes, although Democratic leaders have said they don’t plan to use that power.1
