Hardball and hard cash at the fundraising deadline

Friday marked the beginning of the “session freeze” on most political fundraising in Washington. State elected officials aren’t allowed to raise campaign cash until the gavel falls to adjourn the Legislature next spring.
That deadline typically brings a flood of hot-button communication into the inboxes of folks inclined to write political checks here. Paul still gets a fair amount of this stuff because he used to write some of those checks in his former life as a hired-gun communications operative.
The most eyebrow-raising thing that dropped into the Observer’s incoming last week was a piece of hardball from Sen. Mark Mullet1, D-Issaquah, who’s running for governor.
The campaign sent this via text and email to thousands of people around the state:
Bob Ferguson says he wants "Washington to change course...to eliminate the criminal penalties associated with possessing a non-commercial amount of drugs."
