Two of the most striking elements of the Democrats’ proposed transportation package in Olympia this year were its lack of bipartisanship and its unusual degree of bicameral cooperation — the House and Senate committee chairs announced what looked like a tightly negotiated deal in tandem.

Things started to unravel a bit over the weekend, though, when House Transportation Chair Jake Fey pulled his support for the controversial six-cent tax on exported fuel. That’s likely going to punch a substantial hole in the package, raising the prospect that projects — and political support — will leak out.
