We’ve all had that moment where we snap out of that freeway haze and realize we’re all the way over in the left lane and the exit we need to avoid getting stuck in traffic for an hour is right over there.

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz had one of those last week when she abruptly zipped across four lanes of traffic from an increasingly long-shot run for governor onto the relatively open offramp of the 6th Congressional District after incumbent Derek Kilmer decided to peace out.

Here’s why you should care about this: The 6th District race suddenly got interesting, and Franz’s decision fast-forwarded a development in the governor’s race that might not have happened for months.
