Scores of bills became law this year with a stroke of Gov. Jay Inslee’s pen, but lots of them drew his attention before they made it to his desk.
Like other public bodies, the governor’s office lobbies for and against legislation each session. It can make things interesting when it means stirring the pot in the Democratic majority. Given that the two-thirds majority in the legislature that it takes to override a gubernatorial veto usually isn’t in the cards, Inslee has significant negotiating power as the Mighty Wielder of the Veto Pen (MWVP).
